How To Run America’s 25 Biggest Half Marathons

How To Run America's 25 Biggest Half Marathons

Want to run one of the biggest half marathons in the U.S.? You’ve got to know when to sign-up.

Registration for the 2016 Airbnb Brooklyn Half opens Thursday, January 28 at noon ET. (I’m one of its race announcers.) It’s the largest half marathon in the U.S., and sells out quickly.

The Brooklyn Half is also one of the best deals out there: $65 for New York Road Runners members and $85 for non-members. For that you get a start at the Brooklyn Museum, the course through bucolic Prospect Park, and a finish on the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk, plus the incomparable Airbnb Brooklyn Half Pre-Party Presented by New Balance, which has re-imagined the race expo into something bigger and better—a party with munchies, music, and more. It is, without contest, the best race “expo” I’ve ever seen. And I don’t make that claim lightly. Then there’s the Airbnb Brooklyn Half After-Party in a baseball stadium. That’s some serious bang-for-your-buck.

Like the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, many of America’s biggest half marathons sell out before race day. So here’s how and when to register for the 25 biggest 13.1-milers in the U.S.

25 Biggest Half Marathons in the U.S.

Registration: Opens January 28, 2016 at 12 p.m. ET. Typically sells out in a few hours. Entry via NYRR’s charity Team For Kids is available now.
Why Run? Brooklyn at its best, with a waterfront pre-party, stadium post-party, and course that highlights some of Brooklyn’s iconic landmarks with a finish on the Coney Island Boardwalk.

2. Nike Women’s Half Marathon

24,448 finishers in 2014

Registration: Open now
Why Run? Run a full lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway—2.5 miles of track—home of the Indianapolis 500, with 100 entertainment acts to keep you pumped all 13.1 miles.

5. Walt Disney World Half Marathon

Florida
21,495 finishers in 2015
20,243 finishers in 2014
#12 among half marathons in the world in 2014
Next Race: January 7, 2017
Registration: Opens April 26, 2016 at noon ET. Not a lottery, but the half marathon and all other weekend events sell out within a few weeks to a few months. Charity and tour provider entries will also be available.
Why Run? Part of the country’s largest running festival, you’ll journey from Epcot through Magic Kingdom and back as you rub elbows with Disney characters and runners dressed as them. Finish the half-marathon and marathon on back-to-back days and you’ll earn a special Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge medal. Run all four of the weekend’s adult races for the Dopey Challenge. Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon Training Begins

Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Half Marathon Training Begins

Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon start (Photo: Jerod Harris/Getty Images for Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series)

After a fantastic winter of fun running and base-building at events like the Bermuda Triangle Challenge and Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, I’m ready to start testing my speed once again. Half marathon training season officially started Sunday for my first goal race of the year: the Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon on Sunday, May 31!

I’m really excited for this one. I’ve never run a Rock ‘n’ Roll event, and I’ll be attending the race as a guest of Competitor Group. For my first Rock ‘n’ Roll experience, I wanted to run one of their marquee events, and it doesn’t get bigger than Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2. The 2014 event had nearly 23,000 finishers between the marathon and half-marathon. Plus, I’ve only visited San Diego once, more than 10 years ago, so I’m definitely due for a return trip.

A tempo run PR in Central Park (Photo: RunKarlaRun.com)

My 12-week half marathon training program started Sunday!

I kicked it off with a stellar tempo run in Central Park—my fastest ever. I ran 4.35 miles in 39:03 at an 8:58 pace. Um, folks, that’s a 4-mile personal best for me! My current 4-mile PR is 36:00 at a 9-minute pace. Of course, I won’t count my Central Park tempo as an official PR since the course was not accurately measured, but just knowing that a late winter workout where I was working hard but not all out was in PR territory makes me deliriously happy. Brooklyn Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Coming in 2015

UPDATED 3/13/15

Rock 'n' Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon Registration Opens

The Course

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon will debut Saturday, October 10, 2015 with a start in Prospect Park. The 13.1-mile course will include out-and-back jaunts along Eastern Parkway and Ocean Parkway, before finishing with three miles in Prospect Park. A concert will follow the race.

Registration opens Monday, March 16 with a $55 early bird special.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is expecting field of 17,500 runners. Bands will line the course at every mile and runners can celebrate with beers at the finish line concert. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series puts on about 30 events every year, each with music as the main feature.

The headliner has yet to be announced, but Rock ‘n’ Roll events in 2014 saw performances by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Aloe Blacc, Chromeo, Phillip Phillips and the cast of ABC’s Nashville.

Two local race organizations—New York Road Runners and NYCRUNS (companies I have worked with as a freelancer)—already operate distance races in the borough.

The NYRR Brooklyn Half in May—a race I have worked the last two years as host of NYRR’s On The Run—is the largest half-marathon in the U.S. with a sold-out field of more than 25,000 finishers.

Will a Brooklyn Rock ‘n’ Roll event in the fall put a dent in that number? Read the rest of this entry →

Night Runs, Costume Races & Mile Runs, Oh My!

Costume Races, Night Runs, Mile Races, Oh My!

NYRR Fifth Avenue Mile (Photo: Phil Hospod)

Looking to change-up your racing calendar? Check out three of my recent stories at SHAPE.com. I picked 10 mile runs, 10 costume races and 10 night runs around the U.S. Many of them aren’t even single race weekends, but running series with multiple events all over the country and the world. So forget long runs, basic black tanks, and early morning alarms. Switch it up with a mile dash, costumed caper or run that finishes after twilight.

Costume Races, Night Runs, Mile Races, Oh My!

Who hates early race morning alarms? I do! So make like Darth Vader and give yourself to the dark side at these runs that go bump in the night. From Disney to the desert, Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Energizer Night Run to Electric Run, glow powder to illuminations, these races—from 5K to 75K, trail and road events, fun runs and more—will keep you up at night. And yes, Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon is on the list—one of my all-time favorite races!

Costume Races, Night Runs, Mile Races, Oh My!

I loves me a running costume. So I picked 10 top costume races—some of them are multi-race series around the year and the country—where runners get their get-up on. From dashing Disney characters, galloping gorillas and sprinting Santas to centipedes, shopping carts, and barely there underwear, I want to run every single one of these. So many costume ideas…

Snoop Dogg Hits Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon

Snoop Dogg Headlines Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

The Dogg

What the what? Competitor Group announced Tuesday that the headliner for the 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon on November 16 is none other than Snoop Dogg.

The iconic rap superstar will play the pre-race concert at 3:00 p.m. just before the start of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & Half Marathon to benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (yes, that’s the entire name) at 4:30 p.m.

Is there any chance Jason Derulo will pop in for a cameo and performance of “Wiggle”? I have no idea, but that would be amazing. I’m not going to lie: I kind of love that song. Put it in the “Baby Got Back” and “Thong Song” category. What can I say? I like rap and R&B songs about derrieres.

Run with Meb Keflezighi at TCS New York City Marathon

Run with Meb Keflezighi at the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon

I told you about chances to run with Meb Keflezighi in both New York and San Diego earlier this year. Here’s another.

Meb Keflezighi will be back in New York on November 2, 2014. The 2009 New York City Marathon champion and 2014 Boston Marathon champion is running the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon as a Team for Kids Ambassador. (I’ll be covering the race once again as host of NYRR On The Run.)

You may not be able to run with him, but you can join Team for Kids, along with pro tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, the 2014 Istanbul Cup winner who ranked first worldwide in 2010 and 2011.

“Meb will highlight a world-class field of athletes competing for the marathon title, while Caroline will join thousands of runners raising critical funds for worthy charities,” said Mary Wittenberg, president and CEO of New York Road Runners, in a press release. “They’ll serve as inspirations to the 50,000 runners and millions of fans lining the streets of the city’s five boroughs and watching the race broadcast around the world.”

As Team for Kids Ambassadors, Keflezighi and Wozniacki will take part in Team for Kids activities during race week and help raise money for New York Road Runners’ youth running programs. Money raised by Team for Kids participants goes toward free and low-cost health and fitness programs for kids who would otherwise have limited access to regular exercise. NYRR’s programs reach more than 200,000 children each year in more than 800 schools and community centers in New York City, the U.S., and the world. More than 1,700 Team for Kids runners will raise an estimated $4.5 million this year. Keflezighi will also be raising money for his own The MEB Foundation, which promotes youth health, education and fitness. Read the rest of this entry →

The Brooklyn Half Finish (Photo: nyrr_ontherun/Instagram)

With 25,587 finishers, the NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon 2014 on Saturday, May 17 surpassed the OneAmerica 500 Festival in Indiana with its 25,521 to become the largest half-marathon in the U.S.

The Nike Women’s Half Marathon San Francisco on October 19, 2014 is likely the only half-marathon with the potential to unseat it.

In 2013, the top five largest half-marathons in the U.S., according to Running USA, were:

1) OneAmerica 500 Festival, Indiana: 30,059 finishers
2) Nike Women’s Half Marathon San Francisco, California: 26,406 finishers
3) Walt Disney World Half Marathon, Florida: 23,148 finishers
4) Disney Princess Half Marathon, Florida: 22,739 finishers
5) NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon, New York: 21,427 finishers

Rounding out the top 10 in 2013 were five Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series races with 18,000-21,000 finishers: Las Vegas, USA (Washington, D.C.), Philadelphia, San Diego and Nashville.

For 2014, here are the standings. Of the previous top five, only the Nike Women’s Half Marathon San Francisco has yet to be run:

1) NYRR Brooklyn Half Marathon, New York: 25,587 finishers
2) OneAmerica 500 Festival, Indiana: 25,521 finishers
3) Disney Princess Half Marathon, Florida: 20,777 finishers
4) Walt Disney World Half Marathon, Florida: 20,284 finishers
5) St. Jude Country Music Half Marathon, Tennessee: 19,149 finishers

Brooklyn Half On TV

Befitting such a big race, I spent Brooklyn Half race day at the start outside the Brooklyn Museum and the finish on the Coney Island Boardwalk with “NYRR On the Run” filming a TV episode for ABC in New York. All week long, we ran around Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Half Pre-Party presented by New Balance catching all the action from race week.

If you’re in New York, be sure to tune in to ABC on May 31 at 1:30 pm to see if you made our coverage! After that, the episode will be online at ontherun.nyrr.org.

Until then, here are some photos from my week. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the Brooklyn Half is one of my absolute favorite races of the year. I love the pre-party, the course and the vibe. The race was my first half-marathon back in 2010, and I cheered on friends in 2011 and 2012. Now I’ve reported from the Brooklyn Half two years running with “NYRR On The Run” and it’s always a highlight of my year. Read the rest of this entry →

Run With Meb Keflezighi At Suja Rock ‘N’ Roll San Diego

Run With Meb Keflezighi At Rock 'N' Roll San Diego Marathon and Half Marathon

I already told you about one East Coast opportunity to run with 2014 Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi this summer. Now here’s a chance on the West Coast.

Keflezighi is running the 17th Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & ½ Marathon to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on Sunday, June 1, Competitor Group, Inc. announced Wednesday.

And get this: he’s leading the 1:30 half-marathon pace team. If you’ve always dreamed of going sub-90 in a half-marathon, why not do it with Meb?

The event in Keflezighi’s hometown will be his first race appearance since winning Boston on April 21. Meb graduated from San Diego High School before winning four NCAA championships at UCLA and 22 U.S. national championships. With a 2004 Olympic silver medal, 2009 New York City Marathon crown and 2014 Boston Marathon laurels, he’s a hometown hero in San Diego.

“To return to the streets of San Diego for the Suja Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon after winning the Boston Marathon will be something special for me and my fellow runners,” said Keflezighi. “This year I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge to help more athletes achieve their goal in the city where I grew up. To have that opportunity amongst so many friends and family is something I’m really looking forward to.” Read the rest of this entry →

Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon Registration Opens

Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

The start of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & Half. (Photo: Ryan Bethke)

It’s marathon season! So lots of registration posts from me. I’d hate for your dream race to sell-out or prices to sky-rocket because you missed early registration.

I’ve already alerted you to the New York City, Marine Corps and Chicago Marathon lotteries. Yesterday, registration opened for the Philadelphia Marathon.

Next up? The Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & Half Marathon.

Registration opened today for the race weekend taking place November 14-16, 2014. Events include the marathon, half-marathon, and Zappos.com 1/2 of the Half, a 6.5-mile race that sold-out in 2013. A two-day Health & Fitness Expo with more than 100 vendors is free and open to the public.

So what makes the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon Weekend special? Why, running the Las Vegas Strip at night, of course. The marquee races start at 4:30 p.m. and finish at the base of the Mirage Volcano. Live bands line the course at every mile and runners can get married or renew vows at a Run-Thru Wedding Chapel. Not to be missed are the Running Elvi (yep, that’s Elvis plural), hundreds of runners who rock the race as The King, along with other costumed runners dressed as showgirls and other Vegas luminaries. Lots of marathon news from around the running world.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll series announced a batch of changes for the 2014 Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon after runners stormed social media with gripes about the 2013 race.

A large group of races have gotten new sponsors, including the New York City Marathon and 13.1 Marathon Series.

And the TCS New York City Marathon lottery application is officially open.

Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon Gets A Makeover

You complained. They heard.

Runners praised some aspects of the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon in Washington, D.C.: the course, expo, race shirts, medals and post-race food.

But they also took to Facebook, Twitter and other sites to complain of long waits at bag check, unmanned and disorganized water stations, and a chaotic finish, among other grievances.

Now the Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon website reads: “We listened. We learned.” Read the rest of this entry →
