All views and opinions on RunKarlaRun.com are purely my own. Who am I? Karla Bruning. You can read more about me if you’d like. I mean what I say and always give my real, honest opinion. If I review something, I say what I really think about the product. If I attend a race, I’ll tell you what I really thought of it. If someone offers me a sponsorship, I’ll only accept if I like the product or I think my readers might. Even then, I’ll tell you what I honestly think. My background is in journalism, so truth actually matters to me.
A wide range of companies and races approach me every single day. I get more offers and requests than I possibly have time to cover or even reply to. So I’m incredibly selective about what I write. I choose things I’m interested in and that I think my readers will be interested in too. Plain and simple. And I’ll always disclose my relationship to any product or race, whether I was given a book review copy, a complimentary race entry or something more substantial.

I accept free products, travel, event tickets, race entries and the like so that I can write intelligently about them. For example, I get copies of books to review, shoes and apparel to try, free race entries, access to media events, press passes, etc. I couldn’t have covered the Olympics in 2010 if I had to buy tickets to every event that I went to—no journalist or blogger could. However, any freebies I get will never influence the content I write or sway me to give something a great mention. And I really, truly mean that. Sometimes I receive samples or attend a race and choose to write nothing at all.
I’m only open to paid posts if the topic or product is a good fit for my blog. And I’ll always give my honest opinion. If I responded to every single e-mail that lands in my inbox, I’d never have time to sleep, eat, run or anything else.

Sometimes I decide to write nothing at all. I’ll always be honest about my experiences with a product or race. And I will only endorse a product, service, or race if I believe, based on my experience, it is worthy of “Run, Karla, Run!” Any claim, statistic, quote or other mention about a product or service should be verified with the company that provides that service or product.

As a freelancer with significant ties to the running community, there are a few companies and individuals that I have ongoing relationships with:
New York Road Runners
I am currently under contract with New York Road Runners to host a web and TV show called On The Run. I hope you’ll watch it. Each episode gives insider access to pro athletes and inspirational local heroes, as well as news about running programs and the running industry.
I have also sung at New York Road Runners events including the ING New York City Marathon, Fifth Avenue Mile, New York Mini 10K and other races. You can see a list of those races here. And I’ve worked with NYRR as a Social Media Reporter for the 2011 ING New York City Marathon and as a MOTOACTV Ambassador for the 2012 NYC Half. Finally, I am one of NYRR’s 60,000 members and run lots of NYRR races.
However, NYRR doesn’t ask, encourage or pay me to write about their events. If I do so, it’s because I want to. Usually, I write about the events that I’m covering with On The Run or other popular races that I know my readers like to hear about.
I do some freelance writing and consulting for Sparkle Athletic. I met two of the owners at the 2012 Tinker Bell Half Marathon, and was struck by their creative running costumes. So I did a story about them as a company and as running costumers: Team Sparkle Helps Runners Look the Part in Costume. They inspired my own first Cinderella running costume, in which I wore a Sparkle Athletic skirt. Over a year later, in 2013, they contacted me about freelancing for them, which I now do from time to time.
However, they do not compensate me to write about them. If I mention Sparkle Athletic, it’s usually because I’m wearing one of their skirts in a running costume. I love their products, plain and simple. I wouldn’t work with them if I didn’t.
NYCRUNS often invites me to sing at races or moderate events they are organizing, including The Brooklyn Marathon, The Yonkers Marathon and the Jack Rabbit NYC Running Show. I used to be a contributor to their website back in the day when they were a fledgling company.
However, NYCRUNS does not compensate me in any way for writing about them. They have given me an occasional race entry for working with them as a singer and have hired my band for events like Zombies Take Manhattan. (I’m in an ’80s cover band that is often hired to play races and other events).
I am a self-professed Disney kid. I’ve been a Disney kid since I could mumble the words “Fairy Godmother.” My dog’s name is Cinderella after all. She’s the second dog I’ve named after a character from that story. The running nerd and Disney nerd in me collide perfectly at Disney races.
I often get free race entries, hotel, park tickets and the like while attending runDisney events. I don’t write about them because they give me free stuff. I write about them because I think they put on fantastic, fun, and well-planned events. Disney does not give me talking points, post requirements, story suggestions or the like. As with everything, I choose what I write about, when I write about it, and always give my honest opinion.
Plus, my readers can’t seem to get enough runDisney. Seriously. Just look at my “Top Posts & Pages” in my sidebar. At any given time, half of my 10 most popular stories are about Disney events.
I will point out when I think they have missed the mark, like the lack of official photographers at character stops at the 2011 Wine & Dine Half Marathon, the conspicuous lack of Tinker Bell on course at the 2012 Tinker Bell Half Marathon, the near crowded course at the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon, and corral issues at the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. Plus, they lost my luggage once. Yep, I wrote about that too. I really do believe in being honest about my experiences and Disney is no exception. That also means that when I say I loved an event, I truly loved it.
Family, Friends and colleagues
I often write about my family, friends and other co-conspirators. Sometimes they join me on my running adventures. Sometimes they cheer me on. Sometimes they are launching a new race or product I think is cool. But I will always identify them as such. My main photographer and running partner-in-crime is my husband, Phil. You’ll see his name all over the site.
I belong to a running club called the New York Harriers. You’ll see me in New York Harriers gear all over the site.
If there is any one else that I know that I happen to write about, I mention as much in the post.
