Disney Bound: Princess Half Marathon 2015 Weekend

The countdown is on! The Disney Princess Half Marathon 2015 Weekend presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals starts in just a few days! I’ll be running all the races—Disney Princess 5K, Disney Princess Enchanted 10K, and Disney Princess Half Marathon, earning my Glass Slipper Challenge medal in the process.

Although this weekend snuck up on me, I’m incredibly excited. It will be my seventh runDisney race, second time at Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, and the first doing the Glass Slipper Challenge. For a gal who named her dog Cinderella, this is pretty exciting stuff.

But even more important than earning a Cinderella-themed medal is the woman who will be by my side: my sister.

Back in 2012, my husband (then fiancé) and I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon as Cinderella and Prince Charming, where he paced me to a new personal best. I’d been training hard and was really excited for the race.

My sister and her kids came along for vacation too. My niece and nephew ran in the runDisney Kids Race, and Sis was out there early on half-marathon morning cheering me on along the course and at the finish.

She’s long been one of my best supporters, coming out to root for me at the Chicago Marathon, New York City Marathon, and other races, often with a home-made sign in hand.

Well, somewhere along the way of watching all those races, the running bug bit her. In 2012, I had the pleasure of running her first 5K with her at the Royal Family 5K. Three years later, she’s back again with me—this time, to tackle her first half-marathon.

So just like Phil paced me at Princess in 2012, I get to pay it forward and pace my sister to her first half! I think I’m more excited for this than just about any other race I can think of!

In the last year, she’s notched a few more 5Ks and her first 10K in October, of course, to get a proof of time for her corral placement.

And she’s been training hard, working her way up to 10 miles in one go. She’s been crushing it! She’s way faster than I was when I started running. Although she missed her last few weeks of training with a niggling injury, she’s back to running and ready to face 13.1.

I’ve been training pretty hard for this too. After getting knocked out for 10 days with the Cold That Ate Winter, I’ve put in five solid weeks of running, notching 20-30 mile weeks and running long at 13.1, 9, 10.5, and 12.2 miles, then tapering. I wanted to make sure I’m in my best shape to help get my sister across the line, and I think I’m pretty well near there.

I’ll be running the 5K and 10K easy to save my legs for the big day. And I’ll also be cheering on my niece and nephew in the kids races once again, and pigging out at the Pasta in the Park Party. And, of course, there will be costumes. Stay tuned…

I love how people run Disney races in costume. It’s like running in a parade

How fun that you are pacing your sister for her first half marathon. Plus, you are running the Royal Family 5k which is such a fun race. Actually, let’s face it, all the Disney races are super fun! I love running with family members and I am pretty sure my older sister (who is super speedy) “let” me beat her when I broke 2 hours in the half marathon at the Baystate Half Marathon in 2013. She will be by my side as we line up for the Boston Marathon in less than 9 weeks. I just hope the snow is gone! In the meantime, looking forward to princess weekend too with both my sis and daughter. Christine will be by my side for the half marathon and hopefully we will have a very speedy race!

You sister is *faster* than you? You have such a speedy family!! I hope I get to finally meet you and Christine this weekend. Hope your Boston training is going well. There’s SO much snow up there right now!

I am SO jealous — totally wish I was running Princess this year! But that is AWESOME that you get to run with your sister. I *encouraged* mine to run a 5K (Jingle Jungle) and then the Enchanted 10K at last year’s Princess. But it doesn’t seem like she’ll be bit with the running bug anytime soon, haha. She had fun…but says she still hates running, lol. Have an AWESOME time this weekend! :)

Thank you! My best friend and sister have both gotten into running at the same time. My mom is running too. It’s contagious! Reading my blog finally wore them down :)

Wow this sounds so amazing! I’m sure you will be doing great :) Are you going to have a great costume again? I’ve never done a half marathon but I’m doing one in 6 weeks and have not prepared AT ALL (yes very worried). But maybe one year I’ll be able to do the Disney one, who knows… Cant wiat to see the pics and your report of course :)

Yes, there will be costumes! I’m still finishing them off. So exciting you’re doing your first half! With 6 weeks you’ve still got time to prepare. Good luck!

Good luck to your sister! I can’t wait to see what the costumes are. You’re so great with them.

Enjoy the warmth down in Florida. It’s frigid up here!!!

Surely you must be planning to run as Anastasia and Drizella!

Haha, I can’t say quite yet! Our costumes are still being sewed. But I’ve ALWAYS wanted to dress as those two! They’re the funniest characters in the parks.

  8. 15

I hope y’all have a ton of fun. I’m waiting not so patiently to see what costumes you came up with. You always come up with good ones. I’m thinking Anastasia and Drizella or two of the mice who sewed Cinderelly’s dress.

You’ll be there? I’d love to meet you! Will you be attending the meet-up hosted by Dani at Weight Off My Shoulders? Saturday, 1-3 at Downtown Disney carousel. I’m going to *try* to pop in after 2 pm.

  10. 19

Good luck to you both! Pacing people is very fun and rewarding. I like it better than racing myself (well, sort of).

Thank you! And I agree: I LOVE pacing. I’ve only paced friends/family in 5K and 10K. This will be my first half. I’m more excited than if I were racing!

  11. 21

I WILL SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Yay! I, too, am running this with my sister!!! We head out of HORRIBLE Connecticut tomorrow. Just cannot wait!!!

SO excited to follow along! I ran my sister’s first half with her at Marathon Weekend a few years ago and it was great – I agree, theres’s something special about being along side someone for their first race.

I can’t wait to see what incredible costumes you’ve put together this time! Have fun!
