Runner’s World Holiday Running Streak: Week 1

Running Streak Day 1! (Photo:

The Runner’s World Holiday Running Streak is on!

So far, I’ve been surprised by how easy it’s been. But much of my first week was a “vacation” week, away from my desk and cavorting with family. So it was relatively easy to make time to run every day.

Now that I’m home and back behind the computer, things are getting real. Yesterday, I squeezed in one measly mile on the treadmill sandwiched between work and an evening trip to the grocery store because I had zero, and I mean, zero, zilch, nada food in my kitchen.

I know that not every day is going to be great. Those 1-miles days are essentially my days off. But I was surprised by how laborious that 1-mile felt. Here’s hoping today is better!

Runner’s World Holiday Running Streak Week 1

Wednesday, Nov. 27: 6.50 miles

I started strong one day earlier than the official start on Thanksgiving Day with six miles and six hill repeats thrown in. Bam! It felt amazing.

Thursday, Nov. 28: 2.15 miles

I wanted to run more but this was all I had time for before it was time to start cooking for the big Thanksgiving feast. But I was still riding a high from the day before.

Friday, Nov. 29: 2.03 miles

Ditto Thursday. I had to be at my nephew’s birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese by 10 a.m., so I only had time to fit in a pair of miles.

Bonus was finding a Marathon Runner game at said Chuck E. Cheese. It was basically a motorized hamster wheel. Alas, I couldn’t get it to move. The game kept yelling at me: “Only one person at a time.” Apparently, I weigh the equivalent of multiple children.

After the party, I went to an outlet mall for some Black Friday shopping. It wasn’t nearly as insane as I anticipated, and I got some great deals. Totally worth it.

Saturday, Nov. 30: 3.11 miles

Boom! A new PR of 24:46 at the Trot Off Your Turkey 5K. I’m slightly embarrassed to admit that I neither warmed-up, nor cooled down, so I did indeed run exactly 3.11 miles.

I had to rush home to shower and get to a local ballet school’s performance of The Nutcracker, starring my niece as an angel. She really is.

Sunday, Dec. 1: 1.11 miles

I took a rest day after the 5K and did the bare minimum along with 75 minutes of Vinyasa yoga.

Monday, Dec. 2: 4.25 miles

I was actually still a bit tired from the weekend and even the yoga. My shoulders especially felt it while I was running.

Tuesday, Dec. 3: 1.00 miles

Bare minimum. After a tired Monday run, I decided I needed a “rest.” Ekeing out this mile felt like slowly wiggling a tooth loose. Brutal.

Week 1 Total: 20.15 miles

One week down and four weeks to go…
