VIDEO: Kaua’i Marathon and Half Marathon

The fifth anniversary of the Kaua’i Marathon and Half Marathon on September 1, 2013 had 1,700 runners tackling the 13.1- and 26.2-mile courses. I ran the half marathon on a tropical morning made for running: 77 degrees and overcast, with a light intermittent drizzle that kept me perfectly cool.

Tyler McCandless, 26, from Boulder, Colo., won the Kaua’i Marathon for the third year in a row, breaking his own course record in the process. His time of 2:21:09 earned him $15,000 in the Grand Hyatt Kauai Speed Challenge, which rewards any male runner who breaks the the course record or female runner who breaks 2:45. I had a chance to chat with Tyler after the race. That interview is coming soon.

My full race report is yet to come. I’ve got lots more videos from Hawai’i and the Kaua’i Marathon coming up too, so be sure to check out my new YouTube channel. I’ve got coverage of the weekend’s fun run with Dean Karnazes and Bart Yasso, an interview with 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 USATF Ultrarunner of the year Mike Wardian, and other goodies. So stay tuned!

The Hawai’i Visitors and Convention Bureau sponsored my trip to Hawai’i including airfare and rental car. The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa provided me with complimentary hotel and race entries for the Kaua’i Half Marathon. But as always, all opinions are purely my own.

Looks like so much fun. I love the hula dancers. What amazing post-race food! They should offer coconut water at the water stops. :)

You look way too composed and professional in these videos. Great spread of food and support from the volunteers. $15K is a excellent payday — he should keep that quiet or all the ex Competitor Group pros will be running Kaua’i to pick up some income.

Wow–So glad I found you! I am preparing to run the NYC marathon, and live on Oahu. Somehow I stumbled upon your blog and will be following! :)
It’s been 18 years since my last marathon, but I’m a life-long runner, and blogger (and homeschool mom of four surfer-boys, aka”Groms” )
Will you be there for the NYC marathon?
    I’ll be following!

Aloha, Monica! Lucky you, living in Hawai’i. I have dreams of moving there after my trip. I will be in NYC for the marathon! I’m not running, but covering the race with “On The Run.” So exciting that you’re running a marathon again after so many years! You picked a great one. After 6 marathons and dozens of other races, it’s still my fave. The crowd support is like no other place I’ve ever run. Good luck with your last few weeks of training!
