National Running Day 2013 is Wednesday, June 5! Currently 279 group runs have been planned in more than 130 cities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It’s a nation wide running party to celebrate running as one of the simplest and most inexpensive ways to stay active and fit.

More than 50 million people run in the U.S. Of those, 28 million Americans say they run at least once a week, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association 2011 survey. It’s an increase of more than 7 percent over the last year and 48 percent over the last decade.

So why not get out there and celebrate that you’re one of them? To find a National Running Day 2013 event near you, visit

There are lots of other ways to celebrate National Running Day. Here are just a few:

Timex Sports Giveaway and Charity Drive

Timex Sports is celebrating National Running Day 2013 by asking runners to Tweet or Instagram using #IMARUNNER to benefit the One Fund Boston, helping those most affected by the Boston Marathon attack on April 15, 2013. Timex will donate $5 for each eligible submission to the One Fund Boston, up to $15,000 total.

Timex is also giving away 60 Timex Ironman watches to runners who use the #IMARUNNER hashtag on National Running Day. For a chance to win a Timex Ironman watch, submit your running story on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #IMARUNNER on Wednesday, June 5. Runners can also enter by submitting a photo or story directly on the Timex Sports Facebook page #IMARUNNER tab. Winners will be selected at random. About National Running Day

National Running Day was founded in 2009 as a partnership of the country’s leading running organizations including Atlanta Track Club, Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Boston Athletic Association, Chevron Houston Marathon, Chicago Area Runners Association, Competitor Group, Inc., Little Rock Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, New York Road Runners, Oregon Track Club, Running USA, Twin Cities In Motion and USA Track & Field. It’s a celebration of running as a simple and inexpensive way to get moving and stay fit.

Make your own “I Run…” National Running Day Badge. Mine is above. I run because I can. There was a time when I couldn’t. When running was one of the most painful things I can do. Every time I run, it’s a celebration of the fact that I can.

Usually take Wednesdays off but was already feeling motivated to add in some speedwork this week so that works out perfect. Thanks for the info about the discounts Karla. Might jump on the Rock n Roll DC for next March.

Have you ever considered trying an ultra?

    • Karla Bruning

Happy speedwork! An ultra? When I do too much mileage, the arthritis in my knee flares up so I’m afraid I wouldn’t even make it through training. 35 miles/week is my knee’s happy limit. Over that, it starts to get angry. I would consider a half-ironman, which takes on average 6 hour to complete. The cross-training is easier on my knee. And I’d consider something like runDisney’s Dopey Challenge, where you run close to 50 miles over 4 consecutive days. But 50+ in a row? Man, I just don’t know that I have it in me.

I’m going to have to steal your badge, since that’s pretty much why I do it…that and the bling lol I’ve been procrastinating starting my Dumbo training (ok, I’ve been a little preoccupied with the wedding) but I can’t think of a better way or better motivation to finally start than National Running Day!
