lucy Activewear’s new running gear for winter aims to keep runners warm and stylish. Based in California, lucy is a fashion-forward line of exercise apparel for women featuring running, yoga and fitness wear. As a company founded by women for women, lucy believes that workout gear should not only be tough enough for your workout but should be flattering too.

I put three items from lucy’s Holiday 2012 running line to the test in weather from 22 degrees and snowing in Quebec to 42 degrees and sunny in New York. lucy’s winter running wear passed both the comfort and style tests, keeping me cozy and cute as I ran. I also put them through the laundry wringer a few times to check how well they wear and wash — like a dream. After a month of constant, and I mean constant wear, they still look and feel brand new. All three pieces are my new go-to running gear. They’re a perfect holiday gift idea for the running lady in your life.

Get Up and Go Quarter Zip - $79

This lightweight pullover is perfect as a long-sleeve outer layer on mild days or under a jacket on colder days; I know, I tried it both ways. Made from moisture wicking polyester, the fabric somehow feels like super soft cotton. The Get Up and Go Quarter Zip gets bonus points for style. It has a heather weave everywhere, but the sleeves give the shirt a cool single-color contrast, and the well-placed draw cords cinch the pullover for a perfect fit around the waist. It’s so cute and comfortable, I found myself wanting to wear it around the house, to the grocery store, out for coffee, and everywhere else too.

As a running pullover, the Get Up and Go Quarter Zip did not disappoint. Thumbholes ensure the sleeves don’t ride up. When paired with gloves, the cold didn’t stand a chance of breaking in. My only peccadillo with it is that the zip neck, while more stylish than any other I own, is a little too wide to keep the cold out. For running gear, I’d rather have a tighter fit around the neck. It wasn’t a problem on mild days, but on that 22-degree blustery day in Canada, I found myself wanting a scarf as the wind blew right into my shirt. But other than that, this pullover gets two thumbs up. I was plenty warm every time I wore it and felt both fast and fashionable.

Available in five colors and five sizes XS through XL

Endurance Tight - $79

These are my new favorite running tights — a perfect staple for cold-weather running. Made from a moisture-wicking blend of polyester and lycra spandex, the Endurance Tight feels soft against skin and, somehow, lightweight and substantial at the same time. The tights feature reflective strips and breathable mesh panels on the legs, a draw cord waist and a surprisingly roomy zipped back pocket. I was plenty warm in these tights even in sub-freezing temperatures, though I did feel a tiny pinch of wind through the mesh side panels on the legs. I was glad to have those panels, though, once I got warm and sweaty. Best of all, the tights came out of the wash looking and feeling like new, making them wearable week after wintery week. Paired with the Get Up and Go Quarter Zip, I looked cute enough to run some errands before running the streets.

Available in Black and sizes XS through XL

Fast As Lightning Half Zip - $89

This pullover proved to be everything I’ve been looking for in a running layer. Let’s start with the fact that I’m obsessed with sun protection. Yes, I slather on sunscreen even on gray winter days. The Fast As Lightning Half Zip doubles as sun protective clothing with a UPF30 rating (that’s short for Ultraviolet Protection Factor). But more than that, the polyester and lycra terry knit is soft and space-dyed to give it a cool multi-color look. Factor in the color contrast seams and you’ve got one good-looking running pullover. And just to make sure you look as good going as you do coming, the back features a mesh panel that helps you stay cool and look cool as you leave others in the dust. Moisture-wicking? Check. Thumbholes? Check. Back pocket? Check. The Fast As Lightning Half Zip has it all. Wear it, wash it and wear it again and again.

Available in three colors and five sizes XS to XL
