McMillan’s Pace Calculator Inspires McRun iPhone App

Just about every runner who has ever used a pace calculator has obsessed over the McMillan Running Calculator on McMillanRunning.com. They’ve plugged in actual finish times, they’ve plugged in planned finish times, they’ve plugged in dream finish times to help them predict how fast they can run their next race and plan their pacing.

Now, iPhone users can harness the power of the McMillan Running Calculator with a simple tap of the finger. Brought to you by running coach Greg McMillan, “McRun” is now available as an iOS app in the Apple iTunes Store.

McMillan’s pace calculator is one of the best pace calculators for runners on the web. I mentioned it in a 2010 article about the best online running tools, and runners all over the world reference the calculator as the final word in pacing prediction. Ran a 10K and want to know how fast you can run a half-marathon? McMillan will tell you.

In partnership with marketer Peter Abraham, a former creative director for the LA Marathon, McMillan aims to make the pace calculator accessible to millions of iPhone users with a simple and intuitive app. McRun helps runners figure out their racing potential for distances from 100 meters to 100 miles. It also gives runners suggested training paces to help them hit their goal, along with motivational quotes and training tips.

“We’ve long seen the need for a mobile version of the calculator,” said Greg McMillan in a press release. “With Peter, we were able to build a compelling app that is like having a coach in your pocket.”

Using the McRun pace calculator app is simple: choose a race distance you’ve recently run, enter your time and hit “Calculate.” McRun will generate a predicted finish time or equivalent performance for every major race distance. Runners can also calculate their race pace by entering a goal time and get suggested training paces for every type of workout from intervals to long runs.

I worked very briefly with both McMillan and Abraham in 2011 on a project called RunningTrax. McMillan has coached runners across the spectrum from Olympians to total beginners, and he uses his master’s degree in exercise physiology to combine the science of performance with the art of coaching. Abraham has been creating marketing campaigns for 25 years, working in the sports space for companies like Nike, Red Bull and the LA Marathon.

The McRun app is available in the iTunes App Store for $2.99. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release of an Android app.
