Laura’s Warriors Update: Laura Leaves For California

Laura holds me on her lap when we were kids in the early 1980s. Now she has two kids of her own.

Thanks to the support of friends, family and the kindness of strangers, my cousin Laura is leaving for a cancer center in California on Sunday, May 13 for a new round of treatments for clear cell sarcoma, the rare cancer that she has been battling for over a year.

Sunday is Mother’s Day and it will be a bittersweet one for Laura–she’s leaving her kids in Florida with her mother and sister (who has flown in from Oklahoma), while she and her husband head West for her treatments. But Laura knows that seeking more treatments to fight for her life is the the best thing she can do for her kids.

Laura has also been taking a new cancer drug that won’t cure the cancer, but can slow its progress. She and her doctors are hoping that with a multi-prong approach, she will overcome!

Laura will be out West for a full month getting a battery of cutting edge cancer therapies. We haven’t raised all the money she needs to complete each and every treatment, but we hope that our fundraising efforts will march on and we’ll meet our goal before the end of her month out there.

For my part, I have pledged to run, bike and swim 1,000 miles for Laura as I train for the Long Island Gold Coast Triathlon and Philadelphia Marathon. I’ve logged 69.1 miles in just under two weeks and hope to clear 75 miles by the weeks’s end. I’ll keep marching on with Laura in my thoughts every step of the way until I reach my goal.

But we still need your help. We have raised $3,822 so far, but need to muster up another $6,178 by May 31. Please consider giving or helping us spread the word as Laura ventures out to California for one more chance at life.

Thank you to everyone who has given, shared her story, or kept her in your thoughts and prayers. Together, we can make a difference.
