Simple Hydration brings new water bottle to runners

The Simple Hydration water bottle

Brian Hock is more than just your average runner. He ran his first marathon at the age of 12, competed for the top-ranked high school team in Ohio, and then ran at Bowling Green State University. Since then, he’s put another five marathons and two Ironman triathlons under his belt. But he’s also put something else under his race belt. Brian Hock is reinventing the water bottle.

A graphic designer in Cincinnati, Hock got the idea for a new water bottle design while training for the Ironman Louisville in Kentucky. He hated carrying a water bottle and wearing a hydration belt. After doing a little research, Hock discovered he wasn’t alone. He found that many runners hate the traditional products on the market. They also complained about leaky caps and small water bottle openings, which are hard to fill and clean.

Hock set out to design a new water bottle that addressed all of those concerns. Enter Simple Hydration.

Simple Hydration hooks onto a waistband or pocket.

The Simple Hydration water bottle hooks onto a runner’s waistband or race belt, and is contoured to fit the shape of the lower back. The 13-ounce bottle has a leak-proof cap, wide opening, and grips to help it stay in place. No more handheld bottles, hydration belts, or leaky caps for runners who want a simpler solution to hydration.

“The most frequent comment I’ve heard from runners is that the idea is so simple they can’t believe nobody else has done it,” Hock says.

For the environmentally concerned runner, Simple Hydration is BPA free and made in the USA from recyclable low-density polyethylene.

What’s even more unique is that Hock is using Kickstarter.com to bring the Simple Hydration water bottle to market. Kickstarter.com allows inventors—and average runners like Hock—to post a product and raise money through pre-orders.

Hock’s goal is to raise $20,000 by Tuesday, August 9. The money Simple Hydration raises on Kickstarter will be used to create the bottle’s mold and fund the cost of an initial production run.

There are seven pledge levels from just a $1 to over $500. To purchase one of the original Simple Hydration water bottles, a $20 pledge serves as your pre-order. Pledges of $85 and more will also receive other Simple Hydration merchandise like T-shirts and hats, in addition to a few water bottles.

As of press time, Hock is just $235 short of his goal with five days to go. He hopes to have the bottle shipping by the middle of August.
